It’s been empty for decades, but her flowers still bloom. This home in eastern North Carolina hasn’t had a family within its walls for years, but every March, daffodils still rise in the yard. A ghostly reminder of a gardener who once tended this land. I’ve come to call these ghost gardens. Across Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, and the Carolinas, these beautiful bulbs appear in late February and early March at the sites of old homes, churches, cemeteries, and mills, marking the places where somet

Standing there in the snow, I had no idea it would be the last time I photographed this place. Just a few months after I recorded this video, the house was sadly lost to a fire. It was once the home of the Mercer family of Edgecombe County, North Carolina. And while the house is gone and the lot has been cleared, the family cemetery still stands across the road like a quiet marker of the lives that were lived here. | The Forgotten South

I'd love to see this old church brought back to life. It could be a beautiful wedding venue. Hidden in the woods of North Carolina, this old church was built in the early 1900s and was in use until the 1940s. | The Forgotten South

👀 Let's peek inside this old cabin in the North Carolina woods. Yesterday, I shared a video of the beautiful daffodils that bloom each year at Ms. Cole's cabin, and I received an incredible amount of messages from people wanting to see more of her cabin, so let's take a closer look! If you missed the first video, check the comments below to see that. | The Forgotten South

Built in the 1830s, this North Carolina plantation was home to Irish immigrants, the Montgomery Family, who landed at Wilmington, NC and made their way up river to the land where they settled. I've only just started to research this story so stay tuned for more! I'll be posting an article about it next week. This past weekend, I had the chance to clean up one of my favorite historic cemeteries in North Carolina. This place is called Old Tick Creek, the site of an old Baptist Church which was organized here in Chatham County around 1760 at the branch of a creek that gave the church its name. Perched atop a rolling hill in a pasture, the cemetery holds the remains of some of the earliest settlers to this area and has the largest collection of inscribed stones from the 1700s that we know of in Chatham

🍂🫎🍁 Palmer's Chapel still stands in Cataloochee Valley, North Carolina as a beautiful reminder of the mountain families who once built their lives here before they were displaced for the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Today, the pews sit empty, but the valley is far from silent. Each fall, the calls of the elk echo across the valley as they pass through the fields in front of the church, reclaiming a home they were once driven from. | The Forgotten South

We visited a long-lost African American cemetery with over 100 unmarked graves. Once part of the post-emancipation community, this sacred ground had faded from memory until Cecil rediscovered it during one of his cemetery surveys. #cemeterydiscovery #history #forgottenhistory | Adventures Into History

Yesterday, I spent the day in eastern North Carolina working with Abandoned ENC and the owners of a small family cemetery surrounded by farmland. Together, we tackled years of overgrowth- cutting away vines, bamboo, and young magnolia trees that had sprouted up where one large magnolia once stood, before it fell and damaged several headstones. In a few weeks, we’ll return to finish clearing the vines and to clean more stones so that the names here aren’t lost to time. I volunteer to do this work

History doesn't always come in grand mansions. Sometimes it's preserved in humble structures like this rare 1830s log building in eastern North Carolina that first served as a slave dwelling, then as a rural school house from 1890-1910. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and was restored in 1981. | The Forgotten South

While I was on my way to document an old cemetery, I passed through a quiet part of rural North Carolina where tobacco farms once produced massive wealth for some land owners. Many of these farms were hundreds of acres and in the decades following the Civil War, tenant farming families would work the fields in exchange for rent and a portion of crops. These sharecroppers often lived in difficult conditions that were difficult to escape, while many landowners built mansions- both in the countrysi

It was freezing as I stood there that day, my fingers shivering while I recorded this snow falling in front of one of my favorite old houses. I almost didn’t make this video because I was so cold, but I’m glad I captured this vision of it to share with y’all because the building no longer stands. Just a few weeks after I recorded this, the house was burned to the ground. In North Carolina, it seems that it is common practice for old homes like this one to be burned by fire departments for practi
