Known as the "Pompeii of Greece", ancient Akrotiri was a settlement on Santorini that was destroyed in the catastrophic volcanic eruption which devastated the Aegean island in 1650 BC, hundreds of years before Pompeii. The city was buried in volcanic ash, which preserved the remains of frescoes, many objects, and artworks. Minoan pottery, furniture, drainage systems and three story buildings have been discovered at this site. And today, a bio-climactic roof covers the entire archaeological site
